On January 23, 2020, China placed Wuhan under quarantine.  All flights and trains departing from the city are canceled, buses, subways, and ferries within the city are also suspended.  On the same date, WHO says the outbreak does not yet constitute a public emergency of international concern and there is "no evidence" of human to human transmission outside of China.  "Make no mistake, this is though an emergency in China, but it has not yet become a global health emergency, it may yet become one", said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanon Chebreyesus.

On January 24, 2020, France confirmed its first two cases of the novel coronavirus.  On January 25, the first case in Canada is confirmed after a man traveling from Wuhan, China tested positive for the novel coronavirus.  On the same date, Australia and Malaysia declare their first confirmed case of the new coronavirus.  On January 27, 2020, Germany confirms its first case of the new coronavirus.

On January 30, 2020, WHO finally declared the outbreak of a global public health emergency as more than 9,000 cases are reported worldwide, including 18 countries beyond China. "The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China, but what is happening in other countries, said WHO Director-General  Dr. Tedros Adhanon Chebreyesus.     On February 1, 2020, Princess Cruises confirms that a passenger who was on board the Diamond Princess from Yokohama, Japan, tested positive for the virus.

On February 2, 2020, the first Coronavirus death outside of China is reported, a 44-year-old Wuhan resident who died in the Philippines. On February 3, 2020, China reports 57 new deaths, bringing the death toll in China to at least 361.  The number of cases rises to 17,205 across the country. On February 4, 2020, the Diamond Princess ship is quarantined off the coast of Japan with about 3,700 people, including passengers and crew, on board.

On February 7, 2020, Dr. Li WEnlang, a Chinese doctor who issued a warning about the spread of the new coronavirus SARS-like virus before it was officially recognized, died from the new coronavirus in Wuhan.  Dr. Li became a hero in China and his death sparked a wave of public mourning.  On February 8, 2020, the first U.S. Citizen dies from the virus in Wuhan.  On February 9, 2020, the death toll in mainland China rises to 811, surpassing the number of fatalities from the SARS outbreak in 2003.

On February 11, 2020, the WHO announces the disease caused by the novel coronavirus will be known by the official name COVID-19.  It stands for the coronavirus that was discovered in 2019. After hundreds of thousands were inflicted by the disease that caused thousands of death worldwide,
WHO finally declared COVID 19 as a Pandemic! "Deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, we have therefore made the assessment that COVID - 19 can be characterized as a pandemic", said WHO Director-General  Dr. Tedros Adhanon Chebreyesus.

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW: A Series . . . (PART 1)

“During the Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945), Unit 731 of the Imperial Japanese Army conducted human experimentation on thousands, mostly Chinese. Resulting cholera, anthrax, and plague were estimated to have killed around 400,000 Chinese civilians.”

A pandemic (from Greek πᾶν, pan, ‘all’ and δῆμος, demos, ‘people’) is an epidemic of disease that has spread across a large region, for instance, multiple continents, or worldwide. A widespread endemic disease with a stable number of infected people is not a pandemic. Further, flu pandemics generally exclude recurrences of seasonal flu.

Throughout history, there have been a number of pandemics of diseases such as smallpox and tuberculosis. One of the most devastating pandemics was the Black Death (also known as The Plague), which killed an estimated 75–200 million people in the 14th century. Other notable pandemics include the 1918 influenza pandemic (Spanish flu) and the 2009 flu pandemic (H1N1). Current pandemics include HIV/AIDS and the 2019 coronavirus disease, which was declared a pandemic on 11 March 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO).[1][2]

In 1346, according to secondhand and uncorroborated accounts by Mussi, the bodies of Mongol warriors who had died of plague were thrown over the walls of the besieged Crimean city of Kaffa (now Theodosia). After a protracted siege, during which the Mongol army under Jani Beg was suffering the disease, they catapulted the infected corpses over the city walls to infect the inhabitants. It has been speculated that this operation may have been responsible for the arrival of the Black Death in Europe. However, historians believe it would have taken far too long for the bodies to become contagious.[146]

During the Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945), Unit 731 of the Imperial Japanese Army conducted human experimentation on thousands, mostly Chinese. In military campaigns, the Japanese army used biological weapons on Chinese soldiers and civilians. Plague fleas, infected clothing, and infected supplies encased in bombs were dropped on various targets. Resulting cholera, anthrax, and plague were estimated to have killed around 400,000 Chinese civilians.

Diseases considered for or known to be used as a weapon include anthrax, ebola, Marburg virus, plague, cholera, typhus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, brucellosis, Q fever, machupo, Coccidioides mycosis, Glanders, Melioidosis, Shigella, Psittacosis, Japanese B encephalitis, Rift Valley fever, yellow fever, and smallpox.[155]
Spores of weaponized anthrax were accidentally released from a military facility near the Soviet closed city of Sverdlovsk in 1979. The Sverdlovsk anthrax leak is sometimes called “biological Chernobyl”.[155] In January 2009, an Al-Qaeda training camp in Algeria was reportedly wiped out by the plague, killing approximately 40 Islamic extremists. Some experts said the group was developing biological weapons,[156] however, a couple of days later the Algerian Health Ministry flatly denied this rumour stating “No case of plague of any type has been recorded in any region of Algeria since 2003”.[157]

Joy Tambunting in Congress to represent Paranaque? Who is she?

Do you still remember:
"Tawag ng Tanghalan",  "Going Bananas",  "Pep Talk", "Sports Inside Out", "Loveliness", "Tonight with Dick & Carmi", "Kalatog Pinggan", "Good Morning Manila", and "Triple Treat"?

Meet Joy Tambunting, the producer behind it all.

Joy Myra Salvador Tambunting was born on April 28,1963 as the first child of Atty. Orlando Lapitan Salvador of Camiling, Tarlac and Jovita Ramos Salvador, a social worker, of Davao City. When Joy was 6 years old, the Salvadors established their residence in United Parañaque Subdivision II (UPS 2), Brgy. San Martin de Porres. The Salvadors were one of the first residents of UPS 2. Joy fondly remembers watching airplanes land in the airport from the roof of their home, a view she could enjoy because there were barely any other houses or buildings around.  Joy finished her elementary and high school education at St. Scholastica’s College Manila. In 1984, she graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts, Major in Communication and Broadcasting, from Assumption College San Lorenzo.
Her first job was as a Production Manager for the popular game show “Spin-A-Win”. There she honed her skills in television production. It was also there that she met the young Gus Tambunting, whose family was in charge of producing the game show and whose aunt Jeanne Young was the host of the show. It was during the days of “Spin-A-Win” that a relationship between Gus and Joy blossomed.
In 1988, she started working as a Network Producer for ABS-CBN. Joy is considered as one of the pioneer producers of the present ABS-CBN as the network was only beginning to recuperate after its tumultuous experience during the  Martial Law years. Joy’s bosses were former ABS-CBN Presidents Freddie Garcia and Charo Santos-Concio while her contemporaries include the likes of Cory Vidanes, the current Chief Operating Officer of ABS-CBN. During her career in ABS-CBN, Joy served as the Network Producer for shows like Tawag ng Tanghalan,  Going Bananas, Pep Talk, Sports Inside Out, Loveliness, Tonight with Dick & Carmi, Kalatog Pinggan, Good Morning Manila, and Triple Treat. Known for her excellent organizational and management skills, Joy became a sought after producer for the shows of ABS-CBN, as she was usually assigned the top-rating shows or the shows which the network wanted to make top-rating.
In 1991, she resigned from ABS-CBN in order to start a family. On June 29, 1991, Joy married Gus Tambunting, who was then a Councilor of the then Municipality of Parañaque. Ever since Joy was a young girl, she always wanted to be a mother and have her own children. Unfortunately, her first two pregnancies resulted in miscarriages. As they thought they would not be able to have children given the unsuccessful pregnancies, Gus and Joy decided to put up Pag-Asa ng Kabataan Foundation in order to “adopt” children from all across Parañaque by providing them with scholarships. Through the years, Pag-Asa ng Kabataan Foundation has supported thousands of children, with some of its scholars graduating with honors and now receiving good pay here and abroad. Through God’s grace, Gus and Joy were eventually blessed with three children: Isaac Emmanuel, Marielle Chelsea, and Mateo Jacob.

While raising her children, Joy used the management and leadership skills she honed as a television show producer in the various business endeavors of the Tambunting family. She serves as Vice President for Systems Analysis of Superior Maintenance Services, Inc. (SMS), one of the country’s largest janitorial and maintenance firms. Through her help, SMS has provided jobs for thousands across the country. Joy is also the Executive Director of Marymount Academy, a private school serving Pre-School, Elementary, High School, Senior High School and Special Education students across 3 campuses: BF Homes, San Antonio, and Betterliving. Joy’s leadership of Marymount Academy has brought about a new age in the history of the school, making it one of the fastest growing schools in Parañaque City. Joy is known to the school’s students as their BFF (Best Friend Forever) as she treats the school’s students with a motherly affection.
Joy is no stranger to serving the community. When she was a young girl, Joy taught Sunday school to young children, reading them Bible stories. She continued to share her love for reading by conducting Read-Along activities in which she read to day care students across Parañaque City. Through these Read-Along activities, Joy taught the students the importance of recycling and protecting our environment. Joy served as the First Ann of the Rotary Club Palanyag-Parañaque when Congressman Gus served as the President of the said club.
During her term, Joy helped in the implementation of the club’s socio-economic projects, such as the Rolling Snack Bar.  Joy has supported Congressman Gus in his work as a public servant in various capacities, from being his Chief of Staff to his Campaign Manager. Her leadership and organizational skills have empowered the staff of Congressman Gus to work efficiently and effectively for the benefit of Parañaque City.
Joy served as the Second Lady of Parañaque City from 2007-2013. During her time as Second Lady, she helped facilitate a warm family atmosphere among the various offices of the Vice Mayor, the City Council, and the City Council Secretary through organizing get-togethers and Christmas parties. Her motherly affection and care for detail has improved the working relationship among the staff of these offices.
If elected to Congress, she will be the first woman to represent Parañaque City in the House of Representatives. With this historic first, Joy hopes to be a voice for women empowerment in Congress while at the same time fighting for the welfare of the youth, families, senior citizens, and the urban poor.

Conquering the Peak of LA's City Hall

Corazon Ugalde Yellen Armenta
Mrs. Asian USA - California

"Because of its multi-cultured society, Los Angeles’, California’s capital city, may be considered as the world’s number one tourist destination for Asians. Asians can feel that they are at home while enjoying their vacation at Los Angeles and the State of California per se especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas season. There are lots of sales!  The train, bus and public utility vehicle system at LA is very convenient. Tourists can enjoy riding on a bicycle and other modes of private transport other than a car when touring the City.  It is also very safe in LA. You can see police cars in almost every street corner of the City. People from all races are friendly living at peace with each other despite different culture, tradition, and belief.  Los Angeles: The City of Angels.”

I have been to more than 100 countries all over the world, but  I never imagined how wonderful and convenient it is to take a tour at Los Angeles just by walking and taking a train ride until lately.  I never thought to conquer the peak of Los Angeles City if not upon the prodding of a friend to come and take a look at the City just by walking and riding on a train.   I never knew that the peak of the City Hall Building is open for public viewing.  I was hesitant to go as we might be questioned by the policemen on guard considering that we are bringing all sort of cameras.

It was a sight if relief when the LAPD policemen offered not just one, but many boxes where we can place  our cameras and all sorts of equipment for x-ray security check.  Policemen on guard and City Hall employees were hospitable. They are approachable  if you have a question and even offered help.  Upon entering the building,       we have to take two elevators to the peak of the building.   One  from the  1st to the 22nd floor and another  from the 23rd to 26 floors. We then used the   stairs to the 27th; and, finally the 28th floor to conquer the peak of the City of Angels.
